Sam Fentress has captured a distinctly American phenomenon: religious signs made by ordinary folks from elements of everyday life. For over 25 years, Mr. Fentress has amassed a remarkable collection, photographed along highways, city streets and country roads from across 49 states. Recently he has authored a 159 page monograph, described toward the bottom of this page.
Mr. Fentress (born 1955) lives in St. Louis, Missouri. His photographs have been exhibited widely and are in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Bibliothéque Nationale de France. In 1979, he was awarded an Emerging Artist Grant by the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has received extensive publicity from the press through USA Today, National Public Radio and CBS News Sunday Morning. (As of November, 2007 these links are good.)
